Black Girls, Green Futures Launches

Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA) alongside Seeds of Carver and Environmental Charter Schools are co-designing Black Girls, Green Futures, a program to engage Black girls and youth from South LA’s frontline communities to improve environmental and community health. The program, which aims to increase participants’ access to education and career opportunities in environmental science and climate justice, will teach them how to use soil testing and bioremediation. Due to decades of discriminatory policies and systemic inequities, communities of color in South LA are disproportionately affected by health impacts caused by toxic, polluting facilities. Learn about the bioremediation efforts these young leaders will implement (with sunflowers)!

Taking on Big Plastic

Plastic Pollution Coalition (PPC) recently filed a false advertising lawsuit against Danone Waters of America for representing evian bottled water as “healthy,” “natural,” and “sustainable”—despite these products containing health-harming microplastics and plastic chemical bisphenol-A (BPA), and creating plastic pollution. An independent laboratory evaluation showed both microplastics and bisphenol-A (BPA) in evian “natural” bottled water products. Additionally, another lawsuit is seeking to hold major consumer goods companies accountable for their pollution is moving forward in California. That case is led by Earth Island Institute, on behalf of PPC, International Marine Mammal Project, Shark Stewards, and 1,000 Fountains.

CA Voters: Climate Resilience Bond on Ballot

poster

Proposition 4 is a $10 billion Climate Resilience bond on California’s November ballot aimed at tackling the urgent challenges posed by climate change. It will help fund projects to make communities safer and more resilient to wildfires, floods, droughts, and extreme heat. It also includes over $1 billion for sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and healthy food access, that would support both rural and urban communities. With California facing a budget deficit, Proposition 4 is likely the only source of funding for these projects. Read CalCAN’s blog to learn about our next steps to ensure a resilient, sustainable future for all Californians.
