If you factor in all six scores, the Lincolnwood-Morrisonville men’s golf team would be the MSM Conference champions for the fifth year in a row. But with just four team total scores in the conference tournament at Edgewood Golf Course in Auburn, South County was just a little better than the Lancers on Wednesday, September 8.
Lincolnwood shot a team 370 in the MSM conference tournament, good enough to beat third-place Mt. Olive (484), but not enough to prevent the Vipers from winning their first conference championship since 2016.
The Waverly-Franklin Co-op shot a 357 that day, led by the trio of Tanner Frye (83), Logan Smith (84) and Brandt Crews (89), who finished second, third and fourth individually. Trevor Colwell added the fourth score for South County, a 101, which was the 11th best individually.
Although they didn’t take the tournament victory, the Lancers bragged about the best individual as Nate Brockmeyer shot a 9 over par 80 to take first place.
Brockmeyer had a par 36 of the first nine, with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys. The round was the best of all 17 golfers on the course and the three birdies were more than everyone combined (Frye and Smith each had one for the only other birdies).
The Lincolnwood junior has been almost as good on the last nine, failing four pars and shooting a 44, the fourth fastest lap of the last nine behind Blake Dickerson of Mt. Olive (43), Smith (43) and Frye (42) .
Brady Schmedeke joined Brockmeyer as the winner of all conferences, placing fifth with a 92 for the tournament. Schmedeke shot 46 on both halves of the course, with three pars on the top nine and two more on the back half of the course.
Dickerson, who also shot a 92, was sixth for last place in all conferences, but Levi Weir and Colton Tischkau finished tied for seventh respectively, shooting a pair of 99s for the Lancers. Weir had four pars on the top nine and three on the back nine, for rounds of 51 and 48 respectively, while Tischkau reversed those numbers with a 48 in the front and a 51 in the back and five pars.
Lincolnwood’s fifth and sixth men, Will Jenkins and Michael Graham, were tied for ninth, one stroke behind Weir and Tischkau. Jenkins shot a 47 on the front half of the course and a 53 on the back nine, with four pars on the day, while Graham shot a 48 up front and a 52 in the back, with one par on each half. of the course.
In total, the Lincolnwood six are said to have 31 starts, nine more than the South County six and 20 more than the five Olive Mountain golfers. Adding up the six scores, the Lancers had 15 shots better than the Vipers, shooting 570 to 585 for South County.
