FACT CHECK: Journal News incorrectly reports CPP’s Joma Sison is Robredo’s adviser

COMPLAINT: Journal News Online published a report on April 21 with the headline “Joma admits advising Leni”.

The story, written by a certain Lee Ann Ducusin, claimed that the Communist Party of the Philippines (PPC) is a key contributor to Vice President Leni Robredo’s presidential campaign, and that its founding chairman, Professor Jose Maria Sison, acts as an advisor to Robredo and his spokesperson, Barry Gutierrez.

Citing an alleged statement published in Ang Bayan, the CPP’s official publication, Sison reportedly encouraged “all supporters to persevere and firmly support Leni, who has sworn to stand with the people in the fight against an oppressive system.” He also reportedly warned that the masses would bring down the Duterte administration “if he tries to cheat in the election.”

Ducusin also included in the report that Sison admitted that he was part of Robredo’s campaign and strategies and that he had several phone conversations with Gutierrez where he set out guidelines on how to launch a media attack against him. other presidential candidates, especially against Isko Moreno and Ferdinand ‘Bongbong. ‘Marcos Jr.

Journalnews.com.ph is the official online edition of the Journal Group of Publications tabloids, People’s Journal and People’s Tonight, and Women’s Journal magazine. It belongs to the representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, maternal cousin of Bongbong.

Professor Sison, chief political consultant for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, released a statement on Friday, April 22 declaring Ducusin’s report to be false. He presented the following points:

1. I did not advise Leni Robredo even though I think she is a much more qualified candidate for President than Ferdinand Jr. who has no qualifications other than campaigning with too much money from spoils bureaucracy of the late fascist dictator, Ferdinand Sr. .

2. I did not consult Barry Gutierrez, the spokesperson for Robredo.

3. I assume that Ang Bayan, the official publication of the Communist Party of the Philippines, will deny the false report by Lee Ann P. Ducusin.

4. I was never approached or interviewed by said Ducusin.

He reiterated Robredo’s qualification as a presidential candidate over Bongbong who he said is “a spoiled brat and a guardian of money and other property stolen from the people”.

He also noted that Bongbong only wants to “revive his father’s brutal and corrupt reign and continue the same kind of Duterte’s reign”.

Meanwhile, the CPP denied issuing a statement as claimed by Ducusin.

Robredo also denied receiving advice from Sison or any of his aides. Her legal team, she said, is considering filing charges against those who spread such false allegations.
