Tyson Bagent did it again.
For the second time in two weeks, he unleashed a touchdown pass as time passed to give Shepherd a 30-28 victory over Kutztown State in the Super Region 1 championship game on Saturday.
Bagent joined Alex Whetzel on a 42-yard pass from Hail Mary with no more time as Shepherd won his fourth Super Regional Championship.
The Rams bounced back after giving the green light to host Golden Bears with 39 seconds left.
The touchdown came after Klayton Batten intercepted a pass at fourth base with two minutes remaining, but the ball was taken out while he was tackled. The play gave Kutztown a second chance, and quarterback Danny Blaine threw his second touchdown pass, a 32-yard touchdown pass to Derek Anderson, who beat Batton in cover with 39 seconds left.
Blaine ran for two scores, one of which tied the game early in the fourth quarter.
Shepherd took a 24-21 lead over Hayden August-Scriven’s 40-yard basket with 2:56 left.
However, this advance did not hold up.
Earlier in the game he saw a field goal attempt blocked at the end of the first half.
Shepherd took a 21-0 lead as Ronnie Brown traveled 43 yards for a touchdown, Bagent moved away from 1 after a fumble and Batten returned an interception 32 yards for a score.
Shepherd will play in the national semifinals next week against an opponent to be determined. Find more information in the Monday edition of the Journal.
